Spring has sprung. The cold, winter winds have died down and the snow has finally melted, leaving behind laws that are just awakening from their long hibernation. It begins to turn from the craggy brown of the cold months, and begins growing longer, thicker, and more lush once more. With the arrival of spring, you may be envying the lush, green carpet of grass that your neighbor has and wondering how you can accomplish the same thing with your own grass. Here are some lawn care tips to make your grass the envy of all your neighbors.
1. Fertilize at the right time. Timing is everything when it comes to fertilizing. A lot of people skip this vital step when caring for their lawns. It is, however, one of the most important things you can do for your grass. The best time to fertilize is right before an expected shower. Spreading dry fertilizer onto the grass will help give you an even coat of lawn food, and then the rain will liquefy it where it is absorbed into the soil. Grass will be greener almost immediately. If you fertilize and don’t water it in, you will end up with burned blades of grass that wither and die in the sun.
2. Use the right amount of water. In some parts of the country, there is no need for watering the grass because there is enough rainfall to sustain a beautiful, lush lawn. In other areas, however, rain is more scarce, which can kill grass faster than anything. When your grass first begins to awaken from winter dormancy, it is best to coax it to life with shorter waterings rather than long, deep soakings. Shorter watering will allow your grass to develop shallower roots, which can be extremely beneficial and mean that you will need less water all summer long to maintain your lawn. It is better for your grass AND for your water bill!
3. Leave the grass longer. One of the biggest mistakes people make is cutting their grass too short. This actually shocks the grass and can cause it to wilt and die. Grass should be kept a bit longer to help shade the roots and prevent shocking the grass back into dormancy.
4. Spread seeds early. If you have bald patches or thinning areas of lawn, spread a layer of climate specific grass seed to help thicken and repair portions of your lawn that have been neglected. When you spread seeds, they should be watered daily, and avoid allowing the ground to completely dry out, or else you will risk burning the seeds and they won’t grow.
5. Fight weeds early. The best way of fighting weeds in your lawn is to use a combination of fertilizer and weed killer. There are specific fertilizers which will kill weeds, not grass, and will help rid your lush green carpet of nutrient-sucking weeds. For already established weeds, the best way to battle them is to pull them by hand to avoid spreading poison which can stunt or kill existing grass.
There are fewer things more beautiful in the summer than a thick, green, lawn to turn cartwheels and lay in the sun. By following these tips for a healthy lawn, you can make your own yard the envy of all the neighbors on your block!
